Abstract

The hemostatic effect of tranexamic acid (Transamin) on hemorrhaging during sinectomy has been examined by a double blind comparative study using the cross-over method. The subjects were 63 patients with sinusitis in which lesions were almost the same in both sides. For sinectomy the Caldwell-Luc operation surgical technique was used, and the administration of various hemostatics was avoided before the surgery. Transamin was administered during the sinectomy on one side and a placebo was administered on the other side. The main observations during surgery were: the nature of antral mucosa lesions, the contents of maxillary sinus, and total and per minute bleeding amount. In comparison, the superiority of the total bleeding volume at the time of operation per each subject, to the bleeding volume of Transamintreated side was less than that in placebo-treated side in most cases. Also in the case of the average bleeding volume per minute, the Transamin-treated side was less. The above results were statistically examined by the t-test. Furthermore, the hemostatic effects of Transamin was discussed from the hemostatic mechanism point of view.
