Abstract
1. 1.|The amino acid composition of Biomphalaria glabrata hemoglobin was determined. 2. 2.|The isoelectric pH of the molecule determined by isoelectric focusing had a value of 4.60. 3. 3.|Sedimentation and diffusion coefficients were determined in the analytical ultracentrifuge to be s 20,w o = (35.19 ± 0.49) × 10 −13 s and D 20,w o = (1.75 ± 0.03) × 10 −7 cm 2·s −1. 4. 4.|The apparent partial specific volume at 20°C obtained from the pycnometric method was 0.722 cm 3·g −1 and from the chemical composition was 0.73 cm 3 · g −1. 5. 5.|The molecular weight in acetate buffer at pH 5.0, calculated from the measured sedimentation and diffusion coefficients, and partial specific volume was (1.75 ± 0.06) × 10 6. 6. 6.|The calculated value for the maximum degree of hydration was 1.91 g of water per gram of protein. 7. 7.|Some comparisons were established between this hemoglobin and human hemoglobin A.
