Abstract

We propose a very simple empirical form of the helium-on-graphite potential, which reproduces the energy of the six known bound states, the experimental average distance of the 4He atom from the surface in the ground state and the correct asymptotic behaviour of the interaction. This optimized potential is used to compute the binding energy of a 3He atom on the same substrate. The agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results is a check of the set of variational parameters.
