Abstract
In this chapter we shall take a close look at the implications of Kant’s novel, critical approach to war for contemporary just war theory. We have already had many occasions to refer to this just war literature in indicating the controversies and disputes brought about by Kant’s philosophy of peace and its interpretation in recent decades. Now we have an opportunity to assess not simply where Kant’s ideas lie in relation to today’s just war theory, but how Kant—and more broadly how a Kantian—might respond to the dilemmas posed by the growing genre of just war theory. Clearly in a chapter of this kind the treatment of just war theory cannot be comprehensive. We shall aim at analysing a small number of contributors to the genre who are, we believe, representative of the genre as a whole.
