Abstract
This week sees the start of our State of Nursing series, in which the first article asks the difficult, if not painful, question: has nursing lost its way? There is no question that the image of nursing has been under sustained assault. We live in an image-obsessed world and the searchlights of public attention, driven by a voracious media, always fall on high visibility areas. Health care is one – nurses and nursing are an integral part of all our lives. And of all the healthcare professions, nurses remain the closest to us if we are ill. Nurses, increasingly, are the healthcare professionals we will see at our local surgery.
