Abstract

In September, 2000, an unprecedented gathering of world leaders attended the UN Millennium Summit in New York, NY, USA, and adopted the UN Millennium Declaration committing their nations to a new global partnership to halve the number of people living in poverty by 2015. Several development targets and goals were set, including several in health that are collectively known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These goals are at the heart of achieving sustainable development through poverty eradication. MDGs 4, 5, and 6 cover the main health priorities in development: child survival, maternal and reproductive health, HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria. With only 5 years left until the 2015 deadline to achieve the MDGs, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on world leaders to attend a summit in New York, on 20–22 Sept, 2010, to review progress towards the MDGs, renew the international commitment of 10 years ago, and agree on an action agenda for the coming years. To mark this meeting, The Lancet is issuing a call for papers on progress made towards achieving the health-related MDGs. We are especially interested in receiving original research, country case-studies, programme evaluations, and healthpolicy papers that will help build the evidence base to accelerate eff orts towards 2015. All articles must be received online by June 25, 2010. Please state in your covering letter that the submission is in response to this call for papers.
