Abstract

The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) has been developing gasification technologies since the 1960 s for the purpose of producing synthetic natural gas, low and medium synthesis gas for power generation and chemical production. All types of fossil fuels were investigated from coal to oil shale to biomass and waste. By 1994, the first commercial gasification plant based on IGT's U-GAS gasification technology was completed. For biomass gasification, IGT developed the RENUGAS process. A 100 ton-per-day facility was designed and built in Hawaii to process bagasse. For the next step, IGT's biomass gasification technology will be demonstrated at a 1000 ton-per-day alfalfa stem plant in Minnesota to produce 75 MWe of power. This paper presents an update on the progress made in the Hawaii plant.
