Abstract

Recently, the large number of television shows and movies featuring paranormal investigators has stimulated popular interest and involvement in ghost hunting. Little is known, however, about who contemporary ghost hunters are, what their investigations entail, or why they dedicate so much time and energy to their pursuits. This chapter presents the findings of the author’s international survey research on ghost hunters to answer these questions. While the media have certainly played an important role in catalyzing ghost hunting, this chapter will argue that ghost hunters now constitute a stable and self-sustaining subculture that is likely to survive the waning of media interest.
