Abstract

When one requires a particular form for the energy change of the Hartree-Fock ground state while imposing subsidiary condition, one is led to the random phase approximation equations. The relation between the stability of the unconstrained Hartree-Fock ground state and the reality of the random phase approximation eigenvalues is an immediate consequence.
