Abstract

The convergence of the 15 EU Member States’ legislation in the field of copyright and related rights is not only of considerable political and legal significance but relates to a sector which is of utmost commercial importance. The turnover of the so-called copyright and related rights “industries” (print media, arts, music and sound recordings, films, broadcasting, computer programmes, databases and other types of multimedia works) is currently estimated at roughly 5% of the European Union’s GDP. The rapid growth of the information technology and entertainment industries contributes to the widespread dissemination of cultural, educational and otherwise useful goods and services. Intellectual property has thus become a particularly valuable resource in modern societies.
