Abstract

The haemoproteids of four families of passeriforms that collectively constitute the weaver finches sensu latu have been reviewed. Within the family Passeridae, only Haemoproteus passeris Kruse, 1890 is recognized as a valid species; H. gymnorhidis de Mello, 1936, H. granulosum Rey Vila, 1945, H. danilewskyi var. urbanensis Sachs, 1953 and H. zasukhini Burtikashvili, 1973 are considered to be synonyms of H. passeris. Haemoproteus wenyoni Sergent and Sergent is a homonym but clearly referable to H. passeris, and H. rouxi Novy and MacNeal, 1904 is a nomen nudum. In the family Ploceidae, only Haemoproteus quelea (Marullaz, 1912) Coatney, 1936 has been recognized and is herein re-described. Haemoproteus bubalornis n. sp. of the Bubalornithidae and is described.
