Abstract

Pamela Haag’s The Gunning of America: Business and the Making of American Gun Culture (Basic Books, 2015) devotes some energy to discussing the firearms industry as “Merchants of Death,” pointing to the interwar hostility towards armaments manufacturers with no awareness that her sources are explicitly not talking about firearms manufactured for individuals, but the governmental purchases of weapons of war. She also shows a selective blindness to existing published work on the role that racism played in the development of gun control.
