Abstract

An equation is derived which gives the variation in strength of plane acceleration and first order electromagnetic discontinuities propagating in a hyperelastic dielectric material, which is homogeneously deformed and uniformly magnetized. It is shown that the amplitude of the discontinuity either becomes infinite in a finite time or decays to zero in an infinite time, according to the nature of the discontinuity, the initial homogeneous deformation and the initial state of magnetization of the material.
