Abstract

Optically clear single crystals of MnF 2, both pure and doped with LiF, were prepared by a modified vertical Bridgman technique. Modifications included the use of a non-uniformly wound resistance furnace, covered crucible with a capillary tip and a crucible sheath that acted as a heat sink during crystal growth. The purity of the starting material, care in its handling during storage and the purity of the furnace atmosphere eliminated the need for additional purification during crystal growth. The melting point of MnF 2 was also measured.
