Abstract

The medicinal plant Panax ginseng is used extensively by the elderly in several countries. These is as yet no clear pharmacological evidence to justify a geriatric use for ginseng. Experiments are reported showing that extracts of the root of Panax ginseng have a dose dependent mitogenic action on cultured cells. They are also capable of delaying cellular necrosis. Cortisone produces similar effects when given to cells in cultured, and it cal also extend their lifespan. The comparative effects of cortisone and ginseng are discussed, particularly in the light of evidence that the active constituents of Panax ginseng are terpenoidal glycosides.
