Abstract

The last three decades have seen enormous changes in the way Australians work. Perhaps nowhere is this more evident than in the changes that have occurred to working time arrangements. Thirty years ago, for example, most persons in employment had jobs that provided regular weekly hours, typically averaging around 40. Today, the situation appears to be far different. Many more jobs involve either part-time hours or irregular hours that vary from week to week (or both). Further, at the other end of the spectrum, many persons in full-time jobs now report working much longer hours, in some cases exceeding 60 hours per week (see Dawkins 1996, pp. 277–278; Evans 1996).
