Abstract

After Independence, several particle physics centres grew up in different parts of the country. The best known was the TIFR group built by Homi Bhabha, which included experts like Bernard Peters, Roy Daniel, M.G.K. Menon, Sukumar Biswas—and Biva Chowdhury. P.S. Gill, a brilliant and individualistic man, built up a group at Aligarh Muslim University. The TIFR group carried out experiments deep underground at the Kolar gold mines and were rewarded by the discovery of atmospheric neutrinos. D.S. Kothari and R.C. Majumdar built up a group at the University of Delhi, where they were joined by S.N. Biswas and A.N. Mitra. Alladi Ramakrishnan, who had worked with Bhabha as a student, set up the Institute of Mathematical Sciences with a little help from the great Niels Bohr.
