Abstract

Vanadium, niobium and tantalum, metals of Group VA form hydrides with stoichiometries approaching MH. The characteristics of the formation of vanadium hydride in particular are presented. The accumulated evidence suggests that the hydride formation, while exhibiting many features of martensitic transformations, is in fact nonclassical. A tentative working model for the hydride formation mechanism and the experimental evidence supporting it are presented.
