Abstract
Methods of measuring the contact area between an agricultural tyre and a flat rigid surface are examined to enable contact area measurements to be used to compute tyre mean ground pressure. A method of overlaying a number of contact prints on to the same area is proposed to overcome subjective assessment of the contact area of a tyre with lugs. Experimental data relating to contact area is presented for agricultural tyres for loads up to the maximum rated load for the minimum inflation pressure. The effect of lug height is examined. Measurements of the magnitude and distribution of ground pressure under a statically loaded smooth tyre showed zones of pressure concentration in the contact patch.
