Abstract

Dr. Magnus Pyke, chief chemist of the Distillers Institute, has written a book that should delight the critics of our affluent society, as well as those who are ready to blame technology for our social problems-an attitude which can be expected to become more fashionable. The book is “The Science Myth.” In it Dr. Pyke views our modern industrial society as the fabled bed of the robber Procrustes on which all who did not naturally fit were stretched or cut to size. It will entertain those having a wry sense of amusement over the frantic plight of our organized society. Dr. Pyke lays much of the blame upon the back of science, not going out of his way to keep science distinguished from technology. The burden is heavy.
