Abstract

The information concerning the deepest soundings in the oceans is reviewed. It is concluded that the previously accepted values for the Emden and Ramapo Deeps are somewhat in error and that the Cape Johnson Deep in the Mindanao Trench is probably the deepest valid sounding thus far obtained. The Cape Johnson sounding is 5740 fm after correction for the speed of sound in sea water according to the British Admiralty tables of 1939.
