Abstract

Foramina are anatomic openings in bone and are seen radiographically as radiolucent areas. The present study investigated the prevalence of appearance of the greater palatine foramen (GPF) in bisected periapical radiographs, its location in the horizontal and vertical planes, and the prevalence of superimposition of the GPF on apices of the maxillary molars. The results showed that the GPF appeared in 37.7% of the examined periapical radiographs, and in 25.9% of the detected GPF's, they were superimposed on the apices of the second and third maxillary molars. These findings emphasize the fact that the GPF is seen rather frequently in periapical radiographs. Constant awareness of the existence of these anatomic radiolucencies will prevent a mistake in interpretation, misdiagnosis and mistreatment.
