Abstract

The organization and management behind the Greater Cairo Wastewater Project, one of the largest civil engineering projects in the world, is discussed. The project has been undertaken by the Government of Egypt to overcome the serious public health problems of Greater Cairo and to improve the sanitary conditions of millions of people in that densely crowded city. To carry out the project, the technical expertise of engineers, managers and other specialists from three countries has been harnessed, and international finance has been arranged by means of grants and loans on a large scale from both public and private sources.
