Abstract

This article discusses the Golden Guardian, a California statewide annual exercise designed to evaluate California's emergency response capabilities. The 2008 Full Scale Golden Guardian Exercise (GG08) took place Nov. 13‐14, 2008, and involved a scenario that centered on a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that shook a 270‐km line along the southern San Andreas Fault. It was a no‐fault exercise, meaning that personnel were not evaluated based on their actions, but instead on the effectiveness of the plan to support their response to the earthquake incident. The article discusses the GG08 parameters; strengths identified by the exercise results; and, focus areas identified for developing or revising emergency response plans.
