Abstract
Why do Chinese women lack a collective consciousness and self-esteem? This paper attempts to answer this question by interpreting the "good wife and wise mother" (Xianqi liangmu) as part of the analysis of social gender. The author believes that the phrase "good wife and wise mother" has been used in the context of revolution, liberation, and other discourses. But its application in each of these discourses has neglected the gender content of the phrase and its expression in sexual life. However, the sexual component of life "good wife and wise mother" is precisely what divides females into "wife" (qi), "mother" (mu), "daughter-in-law" (xi), "mother-in-law" (po), and "women" (nüren). That explains why it is so hard for females to find their identities.
