Abstract
Over the last ten years, since I qualified as a doctor, I have had numerous calls from friends and family for medical advice. Mostly these have been common questions that are easily answerable by any doctor who has experience of working in accident and emergency (A&E). Most memorably I had a phone call on New Year's Eve from a friend snowboarding in France: she had fallen and hurt her elbow, did I think it was broken? I did try my level best to assess her elbow over the phone; however, I did manage to miss a chip fracture of her olecranon. I had simply advised her to come off the piste and take some anti-inflammatories. I felt slightly ashamed to have missed the fracture despite having not even examined the patient.
