Abstract

This paper looks at the situation of very old cancer patients. It tells the stories of some such patients, using material from ethnographic fieldwork in a German inpatient hospice. In a context of everyday nursing care, it pays particular attention to how the relative fragility of advanced age and a remarkable stability in facing cancer coexist. Contrary to some narrative conventions concerning cancer, it is argued that the good life can be within, and not beyond, suffering.
