Abstract

The author offers a new interpretation of Rembrandt’s famous Self-Portrait in Cologne. He questions previous interpretations proposed by scholars, relying on a close reading of this enigmatic painting and comparing it with other analogous works by Rembrandt and his disciples. In arguing his thesis, the author explores the concept of pictorial excellence and the ways in which pictorial props (such as the golden chain) convey this notion.
