Abstract

ABSTRACT Populism is here to stay yet contemporary populism as it has evolved without academia catching on. The interactions of “the leaders” as performers and “the people” as the audience are observable through “the media” as the stage this performance is played at. By conceptualizing populism as a political style and emphasizing its performative dimension the author stands outside the mainstream of contemporary populism studies. The book provides an alternative and nuanced picture of populism as a global phenomenon that is not bound by democracy as a goal, nor as an enemy of democratic values. By covering leaders and cases outside the usually examined areas of Europe and the Americas the book provides a much-needed global picture as opposed to the usual country by country assessments.
