Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to highlight the main features of political institutions that contribute to and characterize what is defined here as the global political system or political globalization. It covers the following three main themes: 1. Systems of governance from antiquity to the modern period; 2. The structure and functions of contemporary international political institutions (i.e., the United Nations [UN] and other multinational organizations); and 3. The interdependence of global politics and political institutions with the other subsystems in the structure and processes of globalization.
