The research described in this paper was carried out while the writer was temporary Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Cape Town from March to May 1960. The Glentyre shelter was excavated by the late Professor A. J. H. Goodwin on three visits from 1938 to 1940, and his excavation notes were discovered among his papers.
