Abstract

Experiments have been carried out in which production glass fibres have been embedded in epoxy homopolymers and spiro-epoxy copolymers. Pulling the fibres out under carefully controlled conditions has provided data on the strength of the fibre-matrix bond, the matrix shrinkage pressure, and the coefficient of friction at the interface. The spiro reduced the shrinkage pressure by about 70%, but increased the adhesion, and increased the coefficient of friction almost threefold.
