Abstract
To the Editor.— A PIECE OF MY MIND is usually the first thing I read inThe Journal. It is enlightening, touching, instructive, and amusing: all of the things you probably had in mind when creating this section. Having immigrated from Europe, I sympathize with Dr Bierman and his patient Mrs G. 1 The sad story made me laugh when I came across Dr Bierman's translation for gishlect as terrible. The German word for sexually transmitted disease is Geschlechtskrankheit, where Geschlecht means sex. Could Dr Bierman have thought of schlect, which indeed means terrible—but has nothing to do with geschlecht? Although I am not fluent in Yiddish, gishlect probably means sex or sexual and not terrible.
