Abstract

This review concerns a pair of films titled The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The first was released in Europe in 2009 and became an international hit. Hollywood, which at times appears to be utterly bereft of original ideas, decided to make one of their own in 2011. The most interesting character of these two films is Lisbeth Salander, who has somehow survived a horrific childhood and emerged as a young adult with certain finely honed skills. The ability to fight, hack computers and get to the truth are among them. Social skills are decidedly not. Despite her 24 years, she is still a ward of the state, which continues to perpetuate the abuse she has suffered throughout her young life. This essay discusses and contrasts two films named The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and their source book, Män som hatar kvinnor, by Stieg Larsson.
