Abstract

The black man's survival in the ghetto has depended on his understanding of and adaptation to a hostile white society. This article, written primarily for white professionals working in black ghettos, is an attempt to make this understanding and adaptation a two-way street, with the ultimate goal of eliminating hostility and the ghetto itself. Some of the characteristics of the black ghetto and how they developed are explained, and suggestions are offered on how white professionals can work more effectively within it.
