Abstract

Most gerontology certificate and degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels require a practicum. Like the proverbial dilemma about whether a glass is half-full or half-empty, one can perceive considerable similarity or dissimilarity among practicum requirements across gerontology programs. This pilot study examines data from 72% (n = 158) of gerontology programs in institutions of higher learning across the United States as of 2001. The study focuses on the following program components: waivers, semesters, credit hours, classroom hours, fieldwork hours, written assignments, readings, and community involvement.
