Abstract

Ours is a three-year general high school with about 2500 boys and girls and some 110 teachers. Its neighborhood household heads are mostly professional and semi-professional people. Thus it has always had a good college preparatory curriculum and now participates in eight of the eleven Advanced Placement programs: English, mathematics, chemistry, physics, history, biology, Latin and German. Up to now, German has only been a three-year course offered in the senior high school. There are about 160 students of German in six different kinds of courses: ALM Levels One, Two Three; College Preparatory, for gifted seniors in their second or third year of German; Accelerated German, for gifted juniors in their second year; College German (Advanced Placement), for gifted seniors in their third year with the prerequisite of Accelerated German. These six courses yield a total of eleven classes. They meet five times a week during a 180-day school year. The Advanced Placement class meets third hour, the only sixty minute period of our day.
