Abstract

The Ayrshire town of Troon was created by the future 4th Duke of Portland to help exploit the coalmines around Kilmarnock, which he had acquired by marriage, through support the harbour at the end of a waggon way. The initial town plan by John Wilson & Son was for a harbour and three areas of housing, two for individual villas with sea views intended to serve Georgian sea-bathers from Kilmarnock. The third zone was for homes for workers at the harbour and shipyard, and for those providing services to other residents, with plots laid out on Academy and Portland Streets. The plots on South Beach attracted owners of a higher social status, who constructed grander villas, even if only occupied for part of the year. Decades later the 6th Duke approved a plan for a garden suburb of villas and mansions stretching southwards. Visitors and residents supported the creation of several golf courses that were to shape the town.
