Abstract

Summary Visually striking trees (VSTs) are a familiar part of the rural Dutch landscape. Three main groups can be identified—solitary trees, farmyard trees and hedgerow trees. A systematic survey between 1981 and 1984, using standard sampling techniques, indicated approximately 210,000 VSTs in rural areas of the Netherlands. Solitary trees are usually survivors from a line of trees. Farmyard trees are usually planted whereas hedgerow trees have arisen from volunteer regeneration of a particular tree species and by encouragement during tending and maintenance of the hedge. Environmental education is essential if farmer's attitudes to VSTs on their land is to be improved.
