Abstract

Hooker, in his Flora of British India 3: 242 (1882) cited Verbesina lavenia L. as a synonym of Adenostemma viscosum J. R. & G. Forst. var. reticulatum (DC.) Hook. f. More recently, Gamble (1921) and Koster (I935) have also treated A. viscosum J. R. & G. Forst. (1776) and V. lavenia as conspecific, adopting the name Adenostemma lavenia (L.) Kuntze. Noticing that Kerr (1936), without any key, considered them as two distinct species, I decided to examine the 'typification' of the two taxa. No type of Verbesina lavenia L. from Ceylon could be traced in the Linnean Herbarium (LINN), I therefore here select the plate in Burman's, Thesaurus Zeylanicus, t. 42 (1737), quoted by Linnaeus (I753), as the lectotype. Again, the Forsters in their Characteres Generum Plantarum: 90 (1776) did not cite any specimen or locality for their species, A. viscosum, but G. Forster ten years later in his 'Prodromus' (1786) gives the Society Islands. I have seen the following Forster material:
