Abstract
Abstract: This essay examines the publication histories of seven academic journals dating from 1930 to 2022 to identify a previously undocumented genre of commentary and analysis in composition studies: the “re-text” (for example, “reconceiving,” “rethinking,” “reimagining,” and so forth) These texts not only share common terminology but themes and narrative conventions. Scholars working within the genre believe that by clarifying the disciplinary structure of composition studies, we can improve the effectiveness of writing programs. As a result, re-texts frequently propose conceptual frameworks for organizing the field and its various projects.
