Abstract

This paper analyzes the semantics and structure of oaths and relevant rituals of Mongols and Manchus in the period of the Qing Empire based on the materials from the source “Dayičing ulus-un mongγul-un maγad qauli”. Folklore and ethnographic materials are also used in the analysis. It is revealed that the structure and main elements of oath-taking ritual in the Manchu and Mongolian traditions are very similar, closely intertwined and trace their origins back to the kindred ancient mythological beliefs of the Central Asian peoples. Appealing to a supreme deity and a ritual sacrifice form the principal components of the oath-taking ceremony. Besides, a basic model of a mythological world serves as its foundation.
