Abstract

The ability to ascertain electrophoretically isozyme inheritance using extracts of individual lettuce seeds afforded us a unique opportunity to study the genetic control of esterases in this small seeded species. Genetic analyses carried out in single seeds of the F2 reciprocal and backcross progeny from a cross between two winter-desert cultivars of contrasting esterase banding phenotypes confirmed the segregation of a single gene with codominant action. We propose that the major seed esterases in lettuce, as determined with our experimental conditions are controlled by two genes, one invariant (EST-2) and the other segregating (EST-1).
