Abstract

This volume documents the development of anesthesiology as a specialty in the United States by focusing on the men, ideas, and events responsible. It consists of biographical sketches of memorable individuals written by their contemporaries based on recall and correspondence. It has an easily readable style and presentation and can be leisurely completed in four hours or less. The pioneers or such as Ralph Waters realized that the founding and development of a specialty depended, first upon men, second upon publications and third upon organizations through which men meet for mutual development by exchange of ideas. The book is structured to highlight the men—the visionaries like McMechan, McKesson, Guedel, Lundy, and Waters; activators Rovenstine, Tovell, Beecher, Cullen, Adriani, Dripps, Papper, and Volpitto; and the organizations and publications forming the matrix of modern anesthesiology (the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Board of Anesthesiology, and the journal Anesthesiology ).
