Abstract

An automated hybrid grid generation scheme is presented which smoothly transitions a structured to an unstructured grid within the framework of the advancing front grid generation method. This is accomplished by the introduaion of the curve and area source concepts in the solution of Poisson equations on stretched Cartesian background grids. The area or curve source controls the cell size, cell stretching magnitude and cell stretching direction which are all determined from the structured grid interface to automatically and smoothly transition between structured and unstructured grids. The curve or area source concept is also applicable for completely unstructured grids using the advanang front method or for the interface of 4 semi-structured/unstructured grids using the advancing layers technique. The technique is demonstrated on a circle, a generic 2-D blunt car body and a 3-element airfoil in both hybrid and purely unstructured modes.
