Ferguson, D. C. Abstract Single-vector models for pulsar polarizations are examined from a theoretical standpoint. Limits on the time between linear polarization maxima and minima for some nonrelativistic models are derived, as well as limits on the rate of change of polarization position angle at phases before or after the main sweep. The relativistic models are generalized to allow an arbitrary magnetic field direction in the corotating emission reference frame. An error is found in Smith's formulation. For the special cases of magnetic field direction along and perpendicular to the meridian plane in the emission frame, expressions for the times of maximum and minimum linear polarization are derived for some models. Relations between all model parameters are given for the case where the magnetic field vector comes close to the line of sight.
