Abstract
It is proven that, except in certain critical cases, the generalized Riemann problem for a nonstrictly hyperbolic system of elastic strings admits a unique local solution in the class of piecewise $C^1 $ functions and in a neighborhood of the origin this solution possesses a structure similar to the similarity solution of the corresponding Riemann problem.
