Abstract

A set of force constants in the general quartic valence force field of OCS has been determined by least-squares adjustment to experimental spectroscopic data including the vibrational energies and the rotational constant in excited vibrational states. Account has been taken of the Fermi resonance coupling the states | v 1, v 2, l 2, v 3 > with | v 1−1, v 2 + 2, l 2, v 3 > and | v 1, v 2 + 2, l 2, v 3−1 > and the rotational dependence of the matrix element of the Fermi-resonance operator has been considered. Although there is a total of 117 pieces of experimental data we were unable to determine all 19 force constants and we had to assume some of the quartic interaction force contants to be zero.
