Abstract

From the BJN’s January issue of 1910 comes a fascinating editorial on the importance of the registration of nurses and the general election – in which female nurses, along with all other women, were not allowed to vote. The article illustrates how female nurses were encouraged to be political, and lobby the male members of their families, male friends and even patients. Perhaps we have become too complacent in today’s world and are not as politically active as we should be now that we all have the right to vote. As 2010 begins, and the general election looms, nurses should be carefully assessing what the political parties are offering nursing in their plans for the future of the NHS:
