Gastroent. 5, 513-517.The gastric acid secretion on submaximal as well as maximal stimulation with histamine given via a continuous intravenous infusion was studied in 58 patients with duodenal ulcer before operation. Comparison with a control scries shows an increased acid output in the ulcer patients, which can be explained entirely by hypersecretion. The curvilinear relationship between rate of gastric secretion and acidity can explain the increased acidity on submaximal stimulation with histamine. The acid output (expressed in per cent of that in the control series) showed the greatest increase on submaximal histamine stimulation, indicating a better discriminatory function of sub-maximal than maximal stimulation with this drug.
